Living in one of the healthiest cities on the planet, Vancouver offers a plethora of healthy gastronomies to dine at. From fine dining to local, grass roots offerings, the options are endless. Of course, preparing whole food meals at home is always the optimal choice, in the busy world we live in is not always the easiest option.
I don't eat out that often, but when I do, I like to be inspired. Try out new items on menus that will challenge me in the kitchen. I know not everyone thinks this way - just having something tasty is well good enough. And sometimes when I don't have enough time to prepare something at home, it's nice to know there are some great options out there on the go. In no particular order, here are some of my favourite spots around the city:
Caveman Foods & Deli : located on West Pender street inside Tinseltown Mall, this little deli offers local Persian groceries and a simple, yet tasty menu at affordable prices. The owner is a delight and always around. They offer Paleo-type pizzas and pastas, large salads and have a great juice bar! Definitely a great option on the edge of Gastown.
If raw food is your thing, definitely check out Indigo Cafe. Offering a great selection of meals, from breakfast to dessert, Indigo also has a delicious juice bar and offers meal planning and catering options. Average meals are $9, filling and delicious, you'd never suspect it was vegan.
Located on Commercial drive, Eternal Abundance Vegan Grocery and Cafe offers some hot cooked meals that will have you coming back for more. Simple and homey, they offer friendly service and healthy options. Their dessert case is to die for and the samosas filling and satisfying. Even better, they are attached to a grocery store - get your shopping done and a sweet treat in one!
Tractor has two locations; the original in Kitsilano and another in the heart of downtown they offer healthy cafeteria-style meal combinations for when you need a quick bite to go. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner - there is no excuse to have a burger again. Freshly made salads, soups and stews it's not easy to choose your combination. The line goes quickly and be ready to order when it's your turn.
My school friends introduced me to Meet on Main this year. I was surprised with the bustling hipsters that packed the rustic restaurant. Inspiring salads, burgers and bowls. This place has all of your favorite pub food items in plant-based options. I left leaving satisfied and didn't even notice that I hadn't had any meat.
When you just want to be hugged from the inside, East is East is where to go. Stepping into any of their two locations, you are swept away to the Spice Road without any regrets, you relish in the flavours and delights. Make sure you have some fresh brewed chai tea.
Nuba is a local favourite for Lebanese tapas. Great share plates and a variety of meats and vegetarian options, your entire party will be pleased. The restaurant can get busy, so making reservations is advised. It's a great place for larger parties and get togethers. Their cocktail elixirs are tasty and healthy, definitely try one out!
Shizan Ya - Proud to be the first natural sushi house in Vancouver. With two locations on Broadway and Hornby, the selections of brown rice rolls, wild sushi, organic greens and even quinoa rolls...this is a place you cannot miss! I love the Blossom roll and the sashimi is to die for!
